The busride (3 busses) from Aberdeen to Charlottetown became spectacular when crossing the huge bridge to Prince Edward Island (or PEI as everyone calls it). A nice lady we meet in the bus (Jeanne) offers us a ride to the hostel which ones again shows how kind Canadians are! The only hostel in Charlottetown is a nice little white wooden house with red window frames. After dinner in the hostel the kitchen becomes a bar area and we have a very nice evening :-) After a morning run through this nice and quiet town the adventure starts when we set of with Caroline in her car (who is b.t.w. an excellent driver!) to Cavendish and Brackley beach at the North side of the island. At 17 o'clock we meet with Jeff for a kayaking trip to see the famous red rocks from the other side. Caroline catches some snails which we bring back with us to Charlottetown in the car. It was very interesting to see the behaviour of these snails in the cup of water and I could bring a full report here but that would most likely be very boring for most... Anyway it was a perfect day. The next day I take it easy and explore Charlottetown. I end up in a free museum with local arts and see street performers bringing an intense story on diversity in society (Canada accepts high numbers of immigrants in contrary to its neighbours in the south). In the evening I meet Lisa from Australia (I call her Sheila ;-)) and we agree to visit West Point the next day. We leave early and visit the Bottle Houses, make a picture (with dog) in front of a giant potato of the potato museum (you may wonder why there is a potato museum but apparently the potato production per inhabitant is highest here!), the lighthouse at West Point and the beach. A perfect day on PEI and the next day it is time to move on to my next destination, Quebec!
Quebec is a bueatiful old city with a lot of history on fights over the town between the French and the English. I visit a short 3-dimensional movie that explains the history and strategic position Quebec holds on top of the mountain and with the Montmorency fall on the other side. Especially Chateau Frontenac, a hotel, is a very impressive buidling. At 16 o'clock I can finally check in and meet Jim to practice somewhat more French. The next day we visit the Montmorency fall and a dodgy but very interesting karaoke bar accross the street :-)
It is another day travelling from Quebec to Toronto. In Montreal I have to wait for 4 hours for my connecting train and meet Robert who is waiting for his lunch date. In the end we talk for almost 2 hours... This is the special thing about travelling, you can meet somebody and feel an instant connection. In the train I organise my visit to the Rocky Mountains, this is really necessary since all accomodation is full ... unfortunately. I do manage to arrange accomodation via Couchsurfing and rent a car for a full week but it is quite expensive and a big puzzle... Happy though I have now everything organised to visit this magnificent place (thanks Lisa for all advise!). I arrive late in the nice and tidy organised HI Hostel in Toronto. After check in I visit the bar in the basement where an open mike night is ongoing.
Toronto has a similar feel as New York and I feel at home :-) I visit the Kensington Market with nice little shops and eateries, Chinatown, the CN Tower and St Lawrence market. The next day I hop on a ferry to Toronto Island and make a nice walk from one port to the other. Toronto has a very nice vibe and I love making pictures here of the traffic, people and buildings. Yesterday it was time to visit the Niagara falls. They are spectacular! The surrounding are less impressive though ;-) To have the full experience I also took a trip on the Hornblower, this boat takes you right up to the waterfall and almost in it! (PS: If you every go, please take your own poncho with you. This would save a lot of plastic waste with all the pochos handed out to the tourists...) And right now I am in "hip and happening" Distillery District writing this... Already more than 3 weeks on my way and really enjoying the freedom! Tonight I will leave Toronto and head West, first stop is Winnipeg (2 nights in an economy seat in the train...the distances here are extreme!). Thank you for all kind messages via WA, FCB and for reading this, hope it is interesting ;-)
Hasta luego!
